De strenge kolonel Thursday wordt overgeplaatst naar Fort Apache, een geïsoleerde buitenpost van het leger. Hij wordt er de meerdere van de populaire kapitein York. Omdat Thursday van mening is dat er niet genoeg discipline in het kamp heerst, stelt hij de jonge luitenant O'Rourke tot ideaal voorbeeld.
