De film is geïnspireerd door indiaanse mythologie. Het verhaal gaat over een indiaanse familie met een geheim én een betoverend toevluchtsoord voor dieren waar ze naar toe kunnen vluchten als zij verdwaald raken, de "Secret Pass". Dit toevluchtsoord heeft ook een hoeder nodig, een soort portier die waakt over het welzijn van de dieren en de veiligheid van het toevluchtsoord. Als de huidige hoeder van het toevluchtsoord komt te overlijden is Manu, de kleinzoon, plotseling de aangewezen persoon voor dit karwei. Hij moet de indiaanse mythische overleveringsverhalen trachten te begrijpen en natuurlijk ook de verantwoordelijkheid voor het hoederschap van "Secret Pass" aan kunnen. Manu, aanvaardt zijn lot, maar komt al gauw in conflict met een kwaadaardige geest en oude duivel.
