De weduwe Lucy (Gene Tierney) is van plan iets moois van haar leven te maken. Ze verhuist naar een huis aan de Engelse kust, waar de vorige bewoner, een oude zeekapitein (Rex Harrison), als spook rondwaart. Zijn pogingen haar het huis uit te jagen mislukken, er ontstaat zelfs een bijna ongeloofwaardige liefdesband. Als haar geld opraakt, 'schrijft' hij een bestseller, die gebaseerd is op zijn leven. Lucy krijgt contact met een zeer levendige man (George Sanders) en moet een keuze maken. Kiest zij voor het spirituele of voor het vleselijke? De kapitein moet echter ook een richting kiezen, die hem voor eeuwig kan blijven achtervolgen.
