Modefotografe Laura Mars (Faye Dunaway) is wereldberoemd vanwege haar gewaagde erotische foto’s van modellen in doorzichtige kleding tegen de achtergrond van een gewelddadig straatbeeld. Helaas worden 'haar' modellen later stuk voor stuk vermoord aangetroffen: in dezelfde positie als tijdens de fotosessie. Laura is 'getuige' van elke moord omdat deze zich ook in haar hoofd afspeelt, alsof ze het door de camera bekijkt. Deze angstaanjagende ervaringen zorgen ervoor dat ze moet gaan samenwerken met moordrechercheur John Neville (Tommy Lee Jones) die, tijdens het oplossen van het mysterie, een aantal schokkende dingen tegenkomt.
